Link: Show File Association

Description
This link will show you the associated file description (or ProgID) of a particular file type
How to get it
To get this link to work, navigate to any key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT that begins with "." (a period).
eg.
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip
    · Right click on the node and the context menu that pops up should contain a menu item "Show File association". Click this.
    You will be taken to the correct HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT subkey that matches the default value of the .doc etc key.
    eg.(if you have MS Word Installed.)
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WORD.DOCUMENT.8
    · The last number will vary depending on which version of word you have installed.
    This will work for any File Extension / File Description paring in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
